Political Post from Washington DC
Politics and political history forms the heart of Washington DC. Apart from meeting with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials we had the chance to wander through the political monuments, i.e. The White House, Capital Hill, Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Not that it has come as a surprise, but the Americans are very patriotic and I question weather this has hindered, in some degree, the expansion into new global markets. Speaking with officials, the underlying tone was that they are the leaders in all things agriculture although they are keeping an eye on Australian beef exports to Japan, a market they want to increase. As the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) gets into full swing the advantage will stay with Australia’s beef, wine and grape growing industries. The US only export 20% of all beef produced and Japan is the lucrative market they are chasing.
